Survival Island

On monday the 18th of september we headed out to the back field for survivor island.  We were split into teams, in my team was Danni, Jordyn, Ella, Lutha and Declan. We only could take 10 items and with these items we had to make a fire, a tepe and a stretcher because in our boat crash someone got severely injured. My team took a lighter, fire starters, newspaper, kindling, sacks, rope, scissors, first aid kit, sausages, marshmallows. We also traded tokens for the items. I enjoyed being outside and building stuff like the teepee and stretcher. We had a Tsunami when we were on our island to test how waterproof our teepee was ( AKA Miss Spittle with a bucket of water) and some of us got drenched. We had a great day, it was very fun.

Character Description

For writing this week we had to write a description about a person that means a lot to us but we don't live with.  We had to describe their face, hair, skin, voice, character and what makes them special to you or what they are known for.  We also had to add similes. I did it on my Grandpa.

His frail  skin wears a little more every day. The skin on his hands are rough due to him working long hours involving hands on work such as using the chain saw and lifting wood. His wrinkled skin reflects his age and he has one blind eye.
Grandpa has sharp whiskers which are always trimmed down neatly like the grass in summer. His thin grey hair is wearing away . He has a blistered nose which looks very sore.

Grandpa owns big machinery liked a loader and a 1.7 ton digger.  He operates big machinery for his job.  He has three cars a Ute a 5 seater car and and old fashioned car with an adjustable roof which is pretty impressive. After a long day at work he often goes to the pub for a drink of beer. Grandpa knows how to play the bagpipes, he doesn't play them that much anymore because he runs out of breath.  Grandpa has a variety of  colorful chickens and also has  two cats named Smudge and Tiger who dart away  whenever we go to his house.  Grandpa has a deep voice. When he talks he is calm and assertive.

Grandpa is very kind because he brings us fizz and lollies every Sunday. He often goes and chops down trees for people in the weekend.

Grandpa has a twin who chopped off grandpa s finger by accident  when they were young when they were out splitting wood.

Once Poem

Today our criteria was to write a poem in a specific genre and do it from a character's perspective of the book we were reading for our novel study. I did it from Felix perspective when he had just found Zelda the previous night and had taken cover in the hay stack, but in the morning a party of Jews were on the road. I hope that you enjoy reading it and tell me if there is anything I can improve for next time.

The haystack was hard enough it had,
Sharp hay stabbing,  a thick hedge and damp fields surrounding it,
An unlucky crowd was staggering past, nasty natzies were rushing them and a small notebook was luring unwanted attention,
A worried boy was thinking, a tough natzie was aiming and a scared little girl was sitting still,
Scared, frightened terrified,

Doing everything important.

Novel Study 100WC

Today we had to write a 100WC about the next three chapters of our book. For this we had to write in a characters perspective, today I wrote in Felix perspective. I hope you enjoy reading my 100WC and find it interesting.

The year is 1942. My parents had sent me a full carrot in my soup I knew it was a sign they were looking for me. So I have set out on a journey to find my parents and save their books from being burnt by the Natzies. I escaped from the orphanage pretty easily because the nuns had left the gate unlocked from when the Natzies were here before. I walk down the mountain side. At the bottom I go into a deserted house to change my clothes so that people didn´t take me back  if they saw me.

Novel Study 100WC

At the start of the term Miss Spittle assigned us a novel study. As part of the novel study we had to steep into one of the characters shoes and write a 100 WC from their perspective.

It’s the year of 1942, I live in a dark run down old orphanage up in the mountains of Poland. Its summer here but it's still very cold. I´m Dodie and all my relatives are deceased. Today I went down for dinner. We're having soup, like we always do. It has cabbage leaves, pork fat and the occasional piece of grey plaster from the kitchen ceiling. I finish my bowl of soup. Felix isn't touching his food so I ask him if I can eat it, I knew he wanted it  but I asked anyway. We both laughed after that.

The Holidays

This morning we wrote 5 basic sentences about our holiday. We looked at a range of different connectives that will improve our writing. A connective is a word that joins simple sentences or ideas to make your writing better. some connectives are: such as, never the less, in spite of, but, and etc. After that we spent time improving our five basic sentences by using connectives. What connective can you use in your writing?

Despite already going to the super market I still had subway for lunch. The weather wasn't the best never the less we still had a fun holidays. Whilst we were in Invercargill we went to Spider Man Homecoming at the movies. In addition to that we had pizza for tea. In the second week of the holidays Mum and I came down and put the recycling bins out even though we didn't have to.

First Aid Kahoot

A few weeks ago St Johns for schools came to our school to teach us about first aid. To test how much we learnt and to teach other people we had to present our learning in a way that will help people learn about first aid. We had a few options they were: a Kahoot, a movie, a poster, a comic and a slide show. People only ended up doing movies and Kahoots in the end. I did a Kahoot. For this we had to draft on google docs 15 Questions with 1 correct answer and 3 wrong answers. Then we had to copy and paste the questions on to kahoot. After we had made our Kahoot we played it with the class. It was a great way to learn and I would definitely do it again on various topics.

The Cream Egg

Today we did a 100 word challenge it was about this picture.
We had to try and show off the different types of punctuation and skills we can use in only 100 words.

Eventually we knew this would happen, Joey dropped his cream egg. His taste buds were working hard to make it go back to were it belongs. But the traffic didn’t agree. They put up some traffic cones so that no body could get through. Then it happened they see the drenched bully heading for them. It came in fast and we couldn't stop it  It wiped it all away and the dreams of getting it back to Joeys mouth was crushed.  In every recovery mission the drenched bully always came and swipes it out from ‘under our fingertips’. Which sucks!

My Lions Holiday

This term in room 4 for maths we did a unit on budgeting. Because the lions were coming to New Zealand Miss Blair decided that we should incorporate it with our maths. We had to budget a holiday as a lions fan. The budget was $10,000. There were a few rules listed on one of the slides that we had to stick too.

I finished with $227. 50 left over. I thought that that was pretty good because I stayed in the budget and stayed to all of the restrictions. Something I need to work on is asking for help if I'm not quite sure what to do so that I finish things on time.

The Quest

This weeks prompt for the 100 WC " now what do I need". We were focusing on changing the openings of our sentences and using level four punctuation. . , ? ! " " ' ... ;: ( )

In a world like no other there lived a girl. She lived with her twelve brothers in a small cottage on the edge of town. Like an abandoned dog the children were malnourished and starving. At a chance for a better home and enough food to last them a life time she set out on a quest; not knowing the danger ahead of her. She took only what she needed to survive and no more. I’ve got the unicorns hair, the golden egg. “Now what do I need?”she wondered. Continuing her journey she traveled afar finding everything she needed.

100 Word Challenge

This week for the 100 word challenge the prompt was 'but then the weather changed dramatically'. We had to focus on using exemplary vocabulary and punctuation.

It was a simmering hot day and the beach was jam packed full of families swimming and people getting tans. Personally it’s a bit too hot for me but the fact that I was in Fiji made it worth the headaches. I could see something in the sky; but nobody else seemed to see Anything so I just thought I was hallucinating. Until the wind started to pick up; then the weather changed dramatically… It was coming closer now and people were panicking they knew what it was and I did too. Imagine the damage it will cause… “oh no.”

Speech Board

Speech board is an assessment that we do every year at Drummond School. For this we have to read a passage from a book, memories a poem, present a speech and do an impromptu speech.

This year I did my speech board on Fantails, my book was ‘ an Elephant in the garden’ by Michael Morpurgo and my poem was about what I did in the Easter holidays ( we wrote our own poems this year).  For our presentation we created a slideshow on google slides. It had to have bullet points and pictures. I found out lots of interesting stuff about the Fantails breeding patterns like they can lay up to five clutches of up to five eggs every season. Another interesting fact is that 20% of Fantails are completely black.

We  do Speech board because it helps us learn to speak loud and clear and to memorize things. I personally don’t like Speech board because it’s kind of boring and costs lots of money that could be used towards more important things; like warming the school pool and starving people.

100 word challenge

Every Monday we have a new creative challenge called the 100 word challenge. This is a good writing task for learning because you have to really focus on the words you use because you only have a specific amount of word you can use.
This weeks prompt is 'the water just kept gushing out'.

There had just been an Earthquake in downtown Chicago, it was a 8.7 magnitude. A building had collapsed and There were a 5 fatalities and countless people hurt and hospitalized. The noise was so loud that I couldn't hear a thing, there was a distinct smell of dust and blood.then an aftershock hit. I could hear something wrong. A pipe had burst and the road had fallen in. There was water everywhere and it wouldn't stop. The water just keep gushing out. Just to make everything better it was now wet and slippery. It was disastrous!

About Me

This week in room 4 we created info graphics on Piktochart  about our self .  I really enjoyed this because I liked designing the info graphics and arranging the things on it.  I didn't get to finish it properly which was a bummer.   It was a great experience and i would like to do it again.

Welcome to my very own blog for learning. I look forward to sharing my learning with teachers, my school, my family and friends anywhere.
